SAMSA has been working on a new initiative to include anti-bias training and education as a core part of our programming moving forward. We feel that this is especially timely given all of the recent events of race-based violence against marginalized groups including Asian Americans and Black Americans. On that note, we are creating a subcommittee dedicated to doing work on everything from allyship to microaggressions and what it means to be a South Asian in racialized America.

This past semester, we have held monthly zoom events in the following topics: Understanding the Sordid History of Race-Based Pseudoscience, Microaggressions Training, Cultural Competence and a Patient Panel Collaborating with SNMA, Casteism in Healthcare, and Storytelling in Medicine. A sample of our marketing materials are attached below. Going forward, we would love to hear from you: what can we, as a South Asian organization of medical students, uniquely offer students during their medical training?

Following the completion of our workshop series, we presented at University of Michigan’s 2022 Diversity in Medicine Conference in cooperation with our guest speaker and advisor Dr. Hannibal Person, MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine.
